Covenant Groups

Covenant Groups
A “Covenant Group” is the ERUUF term for what is known throughout the UUA as small group ministry. Other names that have been used in congregations are chalice circles or chalice groups.

The purpose of these groups is to provide each group member an opportunity to develop deeper connections within the ERUUF community as well as to explore as a group some of the major issues of life.

Contact Dan Grandstaff,
the Covenant Group Co-Coordinator
at covenant@eruuf.org

Covenant Groups at ERUUF
Whether you are new to ERUUF or have been around for awhile,
we invite you to consider joining a Covenant Group.

What are Covenant Groups?

Covenant Groups are small groups of 8-10 people who gather twice a month for spiritual exploration, reflection, mutual support, and service. Each group develops a covenant about how they will relate to one another and function as a group. Each group is led by a trained facilitator.

How do Covenant Groups work?

Groups meet in members’ homes or at ERUUF. The group meetings follow an established pattern. They start with a short reading. Next comes “check in,” a period when members share what is on their minds or what has happened recently in their lives. Then comes a time for discussion. Topics are chosen by the group and may focus on ethical or spiritual issues as well as topics for personal sharing. The group ends at the agreed upon time with closing words or a song. Many groups include light refreshments as part of their meeting.

Why consider Covenant Groups?

The small size, regular meetings, and personal sharing in Covenant Groups help participants develop a “home base” for their involvement in ERUUF. Because Covenant Groups also perform at least one service project each year for the congregation and for the wider community, it is an opportunity to put into the practice the values we hold.

Aren’t Covenant Groups a big commitment?

The only time commitment is to meeting twice a month for 1 ½ to 2 hours each time (unless you’re sick, traveling, or have a family conflict). Most people find the meetings and community connection deeply nourishing and fulfilling. Rather than feeling drained, they get filled up.
