Classes and Activities

Hungry for Change: Food, Ethics and Sustainability

This discussion course challenges participants to examine their roles, not only as consumers of food, but also as creators -- of food, of systems, and of the world we all live in. Topics include The Global Politics of Food, The Hidden Ethical Implications of Our Eating Choices, and How Our Eating Choices Affect Our Health and Ecosystem Health. Each session includes readings, short assignments and accompanying discussion questions that address the impact of individual food choices on a range of issues. Based on the book, Hungry for Change, the class helps participants commit to lasting change by developing and sharing personal Action Plans with each session. (The accompanying course book can be ordered in advance for $22. Contact Tom Fletcher.)

Offered by: ERUUF Earth Justice Committee.

Ways and Means

Wisely investing time, money and energy in your life. This course is designed for people who often lament "I don't have the time...." or "I don't have the money...." or "I don't have the energy to....." In a collaborative and supportive environment, Chartered Financial Analyst Leah Ogden, Certified Life Coach Audrey Green, will guide participants through a process of evaluating their current lives and thinking how to more wisely invest their LIFE resources (time, money and energy) to live the life they envision. To benefit fully, participants need to attend all six sessions.

Spirit Puppet Invention: A Multi-generational Class

Puppets aren't just FOR KIDS. People of all ages love puppets. Just ordinary people like you and I can easily apply puppetry in our professional and family life. All you need is a bit of this and a bit of that, blended with enthusiasm, imagination, and creativity and Viola, you have a puppet. Now, the fun begins, developing the personality, voice, movement, skits and bringing your creation to life.

Classes 1-3 will concentrate on puppet making. Classes 4-5 will focus on script development, movement, staging etc. During class 6 participants will perform and enjoy each of the group puppet presentations. Closed after class 3. Ages 5 & Up.

Facilitator: Kathy Cronin

UU Parenting: Parents as Spiritual Guides

This class will explore and discuss the various feelings and meanings of the word, Spirituality.

Participants will be guided through stages of faith development and explore how wonder, courage, justice and faith inform and strengthen their spiritual beliefs. Each class stands alone. Drop-in's welcome.

Basics of Compassionate Communication for Adults and Teens

Do you wish to speak so that others are most likely to understand? To be closer to someone you love? To see your own shortcomings with more compassion? To communicate more effectively in conflict? If so, please join us in exploring compassionate communication techniques, based on Marshall Rosenberg's Non-violent Communication: A Language of Life. Expect plenty of practice and fun! Classes are appropriate for newcomers and those with experience. Pam is a member of the Healthy Congregation Committee and a licensed clinical social worker with extensive training in compassionate communication.

Facilitator: Pam Sobek.

Hooking the Spirit, Knitting Community

One of the ways to deepen our spiritual senses is to regularly practice an activity the allows the mind to quiet and to turns our thoughts to the larger world. Clicking for a Cause proposes a class that will present ideas for connecting spirituality with needlecraft. Over six weeks participants will learn what a spiritual discipline is and several meditative practices associated with handcrafting. In addition, beginners will receive instruction in crocheting or knitting. Experienced crafters are asked to bring their own needles (Size 7 or 8) or a crochet hook (size G). ERUUF will supply needles/hooks for beginners, and enough yarn for the class project—a completed block afghan.
