MAY'S
Sunday Worship
Sunday morning services at 9:15 & 11:15
May 4: Spiritual But Not Religious – Rev. Jeanne Pupke ; Worship
Associate: Carmen Graffagnino
We often hear people say they feel they are spiritual but they are
not religious. What is meant when one describes themselves in this
way and what does it mean in a religious community like ours?
(We welcome the Rev. Jeanne Pupke, the Senior Minister from the
First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond. Rev. Pupke is
completing a pulpit exchange after Rev. Southworth preached in
Richmond last year.)
May 11: Waiting on the World to Change - Rev. Don Southworth & Kate
Beasley, Director of Religious Education; Worship Associate:
Victoria Zula
In his song John Mayer speaks to
frustration of youth and the difficulty to effect change when you
don’t have the power. In our Coming of Age service our teens will
speak to their dreams for their future and their wish to create
change instead of waiting for it.
(Today is Generosity Sunday. Our recipient is Welcome Baby, an
organization that provides parenting education and support to
families with young children— free to Durham County residents.)
May 18: An Uncomfortable Conversation – Rev. Don Southworth;
Worship Associate: Ross McKinney
Recently Barack Obama gave an historic speech about race in our
country. Many of us say we want ERUUF to become more racially and
culturally diverse. We’ll reflect on race and diversity in our
country and in our congregation and how we can help create the
beloved community.
(Today is New Member Sunday when we celebrate and covenant with our
newest members.)
May 25: Remembering Well – Rev. Don Southworth; Worship Associate:
Juanita Johnson
Rev. Sarah York, ERUUF’s former interim minister, authored a book
that ministers and lay people have used to help remember those we
love well. On memorial day weekend we will reflect on Rev. York’s
words and how we can remember well. This sermon comes courtesy of
Sue Biewlawski who purchased it at last year’s auction.

A Course in Miracles (ACIM)
The Course in Miracles is a spiritual path that began when two people in
conflict agreed “there must be another way.” This course consists of a
text, a workbook of 365 daily lessons for students, and a manual for
teachers. The vocabulary at first appears to be the familiar words from
Christianity, but the meanings have been expanded and often take on new
and dynamic meanings. The concepts in ACIM are radical, “upside down”
thinking that challenges us to change our way of viewing the world,
life, love, God, and most of all, forgiveness. ACIM at ERUUF meets
weekly on Sundays, 9:30-11:00 am, in Room 3 of the CARE Building, to
read and discuss the course and its application in our lives. Newcomers
are welcome. Prior Course experience is helpful but not necessary.
Newcomers are encouraged to read “A Path of Light”. The contact for this
class is Carole Mathison. No Fee.

The Eno River Buddhist Community Monday Evening Practice
We are a Buddhist practice group that meets regularly for meditation,
exploration of the teachings of Buddhism, and support in cultivating the
path of practice. We ground our practice in the Insight Meditation (vipassana)
tradition, while remaining open to wisdom from the broader spectrum of
Buddhist teaching. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome. Basic
meditation instruction is offered on the third Monday of each month from
7:30 – 9:00 pm – 30 minutes of sitting meditation, followed by walking
meditation, guided meditation or consideration of Buddhist teachings.
Class meets in the Commons Room. There are no set fees for Monday
evening and Saturday morning practice sessions. However, in keeping with
the important Buddhist practice of generosity (dana), we
encourage voluntary contributions of whatever amount you are comfortable
offering. Donations are used for retreat scholarships and to provide
other resources for our group and the ERUUF community. For more
information contact Scott Bryce or visit our website at http://www.pgacon.com/erbc/.
Humanist Group
Members of the group hold a naturalistic world view. Therefore, we
believe that conserving the planet and caring for its inhabitants are
human responsibilities. We promote a reasoned, scientific approach to
decision making. We are a discussion group whose members select the
topics to be considered. The Humanist Group meets second Saturdays, 4:30
pm, in Rooms 4 & 5. For more information contact Amy
Miller.

ERUUF? Are you trying to figure out if ERUUF is your spiritual

Prompt Writing
We provide a prompt, and then we write for 15 minutes. After each of
three prompts, we read what we’ve written on a voluntary basis and those
in the group give feedback about what they liked. No negative comments
allowed! No writing skills or experience needed. You don’t even need to
like to write. All are welcome. You’re guaranteed at least one laugh per
meeting, probably more. It’s great fun and we get to know each other.
Come as often as or as little as you like. Prompt writing meets on
fourth Wednesdays, 7-9 pm, in Room 1. Contact Linda Brooks.
River Rhythms
River Rhythms is a community percussion choir playing music based in the
traditional folk lore of West Africa. West African music is
polyrhythmic, composed of parts for different drums that fit together to
make a unified whole. We welcome folks who are interested in learning
more about this musical tradition. We invite experienced and novice
drummers to join us to play together each week. We teach each week and
have drums to lend. Follow the beat of the music and your heart on a
Friday to make high-energy music together with River Rhythms! We invite
experienced teachers from time to time, and charge participants when
this happens. Follow the River Rhythms schedule at http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/RiverRhythms/.
We meet weekly on Fridays, from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Commons Room.
