In Care (May 2012)

After the Multicultural Conference that ERUUF hosted in mid-February, one of Rev. Alicia Forde's strongest recommendations was that I take a team to the Leading Edge Conference in NYC in April. Some of us had already met the dynamic Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, the creator of the Leading Edge Conference, at General Assembly last June in Charlotte. Jacqui leads a vibrant, progressive Presbyterian congregation of 750 members on the lower east side of Manhattan. Her mission is to bring together leaders who have successfully created multi-cultural congregations with those who aspire to do this. The UU congregations that are experiencing success at becoming truly multicultural say this conference has made all the difference to success.

On the last Sunday in March, I put aside the sermon I'd been working on to preach instead about the death of Trayvon Martin. In it I mentioned something reported by only one source (ABC News), which is that his family hadn't been notified of his death for three days.

Days after the Installation Weekend I'm still floating, and I hope I don't come down anytime soon. Thank you to everyone who helped make this very memorable and special experience—Linda Brooks who organized Saturday's Multicultural Conference and chaired the Installation Committee, Janet Hitti who organized a team to support the Saturday conference, and Jennifer Richards who nurtured a hundred bodies (and souls) with a fabulous lunch. And thank you to everyone who showed up on Sunday to straighten, greet, sing, drum, play or speak during the Installation service, and to Holly McKinney who organized the team of folks that created the beautiful reception afterward.

What can I do to defeat Amendment One?![]()
On May 8th 2012, all registered voters in North Carolina will have the opportunity to vote either for or against a proposed amendment to the state constitution stating that "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state." To protect all families in North Carolina and to keep blatant discrimination out of our constitution, here are some of the things you can do to defeat Amendment One:
