From the Director of Religious Education N othing less than saving the world…This is a time for lots of change at ERUUF and especially in RE. As with any change things can be exciting and unsettling. January 25-26 is the visioning retreat that we hope will help the RE committee and ERUUF envision an exciting religious education ministry in the coming year. As we look ahead we will be encouraging the congregation, teachers, parents and kids to provide feedback on what’s important to them and how all of us can work together to meet the needs of all our families, however that may look. Some changes will be more immediate. One of those changes is that Stephen Phillips, long time RE assistant, will be leaving us in early Feb. Over the years, Stephen has given a great deal to ERUUF and is especially loved by the children. In addition to his Sunday mornings at ERUUF Stephen has been working a couple of other jobs and with his new family he has felt the need to spend more time with them. February 3 will be his last day on the job. We’ll have punch and cake in the Commons Room following each service so folks can have an opportunity to stop by and wish him well. For the remainder of the fiscal year, Valerie Doebler (who has been working as my weekday assistant) will take over the Sunday morning responsibilities. Be sure to say hi when you get a chance.

Middle School Youth Group We had a field trip on Saturday, January 12 to the NC Museum of Life and Science with guests Li and Uin Ksor (ages 11 and 13). In December, our youth came up with the idea of inviting the Ksor children to join us for an activity on a Saturday when their parents and older brother usually work at the Habitat for Humanity house. January 20, we had a special guest, ERUUFian Cindy Kuhn, co-author of Just Say Know: Talking with Kids about Drugs and Alcohol. She led us in a spirited and educational game based on Jeopardy with topics like “Name that Drug” and “Drugs and the Brain”. February 3, we will bake cookies for the shelter and plan for a MSYG performance at Café ERUUF Saturday, February 23. February 17, we will rehearse for Café ERUUF. Middle School Youth Group meets on the first and third Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 6:00 in Room 7. For more information, ask one of our MSYG advisors: Alex Freemerman, Holly Kingdon, or Rachel Searles or contact Holly Kingdon. The mission of Religious Education at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is: To serve the children and youth of ERUUF by nurturing their spiritual growth, promoting UU values and encouraging their participation in our religious community. Our Unitarian Universalist Principles (in language for children):
Provide supplemental materials for lessons and Children’s Chapel, and other teacher resources, as identified. Provide a safe, warm, nurturing, positive environment. Provide opportunities for family involvement, and for family/teacher activities. Build awareness of the RE Program among parents and the congregation. Children and youth worship as part of the larger congregation at the beginning of most services and in intergenerational services. They also gather once a month for Children’s Chapel, a special 15 minute worship service created for and by themselves. Special emphasis is placed on experiencing a sense of the sacred through stories, music and meditation.
