Missoula Children's Theatre returns for our 3rd year of Summer Theatre Camp!

Where:  Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

When: Aug. 18-22

Ages:  6-19 year olds.

Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 30 years now from Montana to Japan.  This summer we welcome them back to the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham, NC. Our tour team will arrive with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. There are camp openings for 50 cast members.  Camp runs from 9 am to 4 pm with fun activities interspersed with play rehearsals. (Early drop off and late pick up are available by request). A public performance will be presented on Friday, Aug. 22 at 7 pm in the sanctuary or the Eno River Fellowship. The play is an original adaptation of Robin Hood. . . another classic story that we know and love.

Registrations are available from Kate Beasley 489-2575 or education@eruuf.org or just click this link: SUMMER  CAMP REGISTRATION

Fees are $225 for the week with a substantial discounts for additional children from the same family.

special opportunities for teens: They may receive a $75 fee waiver if they are willing to assist with special projects for the younger children in addition to potential stipends depending on camp enrollment.  Contact Kate Beasley for more information.

From the Director of Religious Education

Nothing less than saving the world…

This is a time for lots of change at ERUUF and especially in RE. As with any change things can be exciting and unsettling. January 25-26 is the visioning retreat that we hope will help the RE committee and ERUUF envision an exciting religious education ministry in the coming year.

As we look ahead we will be encouraging the congregation, teachers, parents and kids to provide feedback on what’s important to them and how all of us can work together to meet the needs of all our families, however that may look.

Some changes will be more immediate. One of those changes is that Stephen Phillips, long time RE assistant, will be leaving us in early Feb. Over the years, Stephen has given a great deal to ERUUF and is especially loved by the children. In addition to his Sunday mornings at ERUUF Stephen has been working a couple of other jobs and with his new family he has felt the need to spend more time with them. February 3 will be his last day on the job. We’ll have punch and cake in the Commons Room following each service so folks can have an opportunity to stop by and wish him well.

For the remainder of the fiscal year, Valerie Doebler (who has been working as my weekday assistant) will take over the Sunday morning responsibilities. Be sure to say hi when you get a chance.

Summer Theatre Camp is Aug 18-22!
Once again we will be bringing Missoula Children’s Theatre to ERUUF for our annual summer Theatre Camp. Camp is open for rising First graders through High School. Limited work opportunities are available for ages 14 + up. Scholarships are also available. Registration forms and additional information are available in the office and on the website. This a popular camp that fills up early so get those registrations in.

Secret Pals 2008
It's time again for one of ERUUF's favorite intergenerational experiences! Secret Pals is a great way for ERUUF children to make a special connection with an adult in the congregation. This year, there will be a focus on social justice, and pal pairs are encouraged to meet each other at ERUUF's Mini Crop Walk on March 16. Palling will begin on February 17. Open to children Kindergarten through third grade. Sign up at the RE table in coffee hour, or contact Christine Amabile.

Mini Crop Walk
This year, ERUUF's Mini Crop Walk on March 16 will include a variety of activity stations that provide information about hunger issues in our world and community. If you are interested in helping with the event, please contact Christine Amabile.

Middle School Youth Group
At our January 6 meeting, the youth reviewed the youth group activities of the last few months to see how they fit with the five components of balanced youth group programming: worship, community building, social action, learning, and leadership. Then they brainstormed ideas for activities for the next few months.

We had a field trip on Saturday, January 12 to the NC Museum of Life and Science with guests Li and Uin Ksor (ages 11 and 13). In December, our youth came up with the idea of inviting the Ksor children to join us for an activity on a Saturday when their parents and older brother usually work at the Habitat for Humanity house.

January 20, we had a special guest, ERUUFian Cindy Kuhn, co-author of Just Say Know: Talking with Kids about Drugs and Alcohol. She led us in a spirited and educational game based on Jeopardy with topics like “Name that Drug” and “Drugs and the Brain”.

February 3, we will bake cookies for the shelter and plan for a MSYG performance at Café ERUUF Saturday, February 23. February 17, we will rehearse for Café ERUUF.

Middle School Youth Group meets on the first and third Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 6:00 in Room 7. For more information, ask one of our MSYG advisors: Alex Freemerman, Holly Kingdon, or Rachel Searles or contact Holly Kingdon.

      Our Religious Philosophy

The mission of Religious Education at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is: To serve the children and youth of ERUUF by nurturing their spiritual growth, promoting UU values and encouraging their participation in our religious community.

Our Unitarian Universalist Principles (in language for children):

  • We believe that each and every person is important.

  • We believe that all people should be treated fairly.

  • We believe that our churches are places where all people are accepted and where we keep on learning together.

  • We believe that each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.

  • We believe that everyone should have a vote about things that concern them.

  • We believe in working for a peaceful, fair and free world.

  • We believe in caring for our planet earth.

Our Goals for this year are:

  • Provide age appropriate, stimulating curricula.

  • Provide supplemental materials for lessons and Children’s Chapel, and other teacher resources, as identified.

  • Provide a safe, warm, nurturing, positive environment.

  • Provide opportunities for family involvement, and for family/teacher activities.

  • Build awareness of the RE Program among parents and the congregation.

Children and youth worship as part of the larger congregation at the beginning of most services and in intergenerational services. They also gather once a month for Children’s Chapel, a special 15 minute worship service created for and by themselves. Special emphasis is placed on experiencing a sense of the sacred through stories, music and meditation.
