The depression peer support group is for people who have a long-term mood disorder, such as depression, or bipolar disorder. These conditions carry a stigma and can be very isolating, as other people may not “get it”. The group offers members understanding, hope, humor, practical advice, and information, in a caring, warm and sensitive environment.

The group does not provide psychotherapy. To join, members must have a mood disorder diagnosis and be under the care of a licensed mental health provider (psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical social worker, etc.). All members must sign a strict confidentiality agreement.

The group meets once per week for approximately one and a half hours. The goal is to give support, empathy, and direct practical problem-solving. Each member has a chance to talk, as the group actively listens. The group cheers on accomplishments and offers empathy for challenges. Sometimes members ask for advice, information, research, or resources, while other times, they just want to share. The group may also organize optional social outings of interest to members.
