Durham CAN action on affordable housing event
Anoither opportunity to promote the use of the Jackson land parcel for affordable housing.
At this Council Meeting, the Durham City Manager is scheduled to present the RFQ (Request for Qualifications) process for the selection of a developer for the Jackson parcel.
Durham CAN fought and secured public agreement from the majority of City Council members (Bell, Schewel, Johnson and Reece) in support of a mixed development which includes the construction of both affordable and market rate housing.
Earlier this year 500 CAN members praised Mayor Bill Bell and Steve Schewel for keeping their word to CAN.

We are urging all interested Durham residents to attend the City work session to:--- Thank the Durham City Manager for all work that has gone into developing a transparent RFQ
--- Ensure proposed RFQ process calls for the promised percentage of affordable housing to Durham residents
--- Ensure public funds are used to subsidize affordable housing, and not to pay for market rate units
----Remind City officials that affordable housing downtown depends on the vision and action of our elected bodies. This is because of downtown Durham's unique zoning. It is the case that many other affordable housing tools (like density bonuses) don't apply. Jackson street actually represents a very rare and important opportunity for the City to help ensure that downtown housing is not just for the well-to-do.
