This is a very important meeting for moving forward with creating affordable housing in Durham. CAN encourages all Clergy and lay leaders (from all member institutions-including those discerning membership) to attend.

In June, Mayor Bell and five Council members participated with 500 people in the Durham CAN Assembly. They publicly announced that, understanding that immediate City actions are required to prepare applications for affordable housing development funding, their intent was for City to marshal its forces to promptly convey suitable City-owned land to a nonprofit developer to build homes for low income people. This project would be the first new apartments downtown or in the ninth Street district that would be affordable to households with a mix of incomes from $14,500 to $40,500.

Regardless of the public commitments and public promises CAN is finding some unexpected resistance. If by September 8, the City votes to choose a development partner and pursue a fast-track low income housing tax credit proposal schedule, Durham could win as much as $9 million in federal tax credits and state grants for this apartment building. If they do not apply now, this project would be indefinitely delayed, and could not open before 2019.

Join in the effort as CAN works to develop an action-able strategy to unclog this vital process.
