Nontheist Group (Virtual Meeting)
Nonreligious Humanism
We will be discussing Maria Greene’s essay “Nonreligious Humanism” in 'Humanist Voices in Unitarian Universalism'. Central to her essay seems to be the question of whether nonreligious people really belong in Unitarian Universalism -- whether they are equally respected and welcomed or whether they are treated as second-class citizens by their congregations and/or the UUA. Greene has clearly had some difficult moments expressing her nonreligious cosmology in her UU community. She specifically mentions being considered narrow-minded, unimaginative, and spiritually immature. What is your experience at ERUUF and the larger UU community? We have permission to make paper copies of the essay but not to share electronically, so there are copies available in the ERUUF office in the "pick-up" mailbox. Stop by and pick one up soon so you have a chance to read it before the meeting. Please email if you take the next to last one so we can replenish the supply, and if getting to ERUUF is a hardship so we can mail a copy to you.
