Letter to the Editor against HB 2
The following Letter to the Editor appeared in the Thursday, April 21 printed edition of the Durham Herald Sun. (It was also sent to the N&O but has not yet been published.) ERUUF’s Board carefully weighed the need to speak out on this moral issue against the constraints the congregation has as a non-profit not to lobby for or against a particular piece of legislation.

To the Editor: As people of faith we are angry and distressed by North Carolina’s new Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (HB 2). This hastily written, poorly conceived legislation attempts to solve social problems that we do not have. There is no current epidemic of men invading women’s bathrooms or children’s locker rooms.

The Justice Ministry of the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durham, North Carolina rejects in its strongest terms both the spirit and the likely unconstitutional intent of the new Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (HB 2), the so-called discriminatory anti-LGBTQ legislation that has now become law in our state of North Carolina.

ERUUF raises $2770 for CROP WALK!
Despite it being cold and rainy, nine ERUUFians joined in the Durham CROP's Hunger WALK this past Sunday, March 20. Many more signed up and contributed online as part of TEAM ERUUF for a very successful effort to raise money for Church World Service to stop hunger in Durham and in the world. Canvassing Against Islamophobia

Following Manzoor Cheema's talk on Dismantling Racism and Islamophobia, I felt moved to make a difference. I was glad to learn that exactly one week after Mr. Cheema's talk at ERUUF, I had an opportunity to canvas with the Jewish Voices for Peace (JVP) and the Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia (MERI).
Justice Council Resolution on Faculty Unions at Duke
The Justice Council has approved a Resolution Supporting the Right of Contingent Faculty at Duke University to Organize a Union. The text of the resolution can be found here.

Community Edible Landscape Program breaks ground for fruit trees and berry bushes
“Greenacres is the place to be” broke out in chorus among the dozen-plus ERUUFians 
gathered in the grassy space next to the Fellowship Hall. Maybe it was having a pitchfork, rake, or shovel in hand on a beautiful November day that led to the singing (mimicking the classic 60s TV show), happy with our efforts and time spent together. We had just completed a project to plant fruit trees and berry bushes, part of the Community Edible Landscape Program (CELP).

ERUUFians support Durham CAN's Affordable Housing Action
Seven ERUUFians joined 150-170 Durham CAN members at the September 10 Durham City Council work session to show support for creating affordable housiing near the proposed stops of the light rail. The effort was successful at eliminating the option of a direct sale of the land to a developer. However, no final decision was made about how the land would be used. The City's Development Office is recommending a mixed use plan that would not necessarily include affordable housing.

Justice Vision Quest Reports In - Next Steps Being Planned
In May, 2014, a Vision Quest Task Force to look into the best practices for doing justice work as a larger congregation was established at ERUUF. After a number of months of study, consultation and discovery, the Task Force has completed its work and generated a very informative and thought-provoking report. The Coordinating Team has written a response to the report and moved forward with implementation by forming and charging a Transition Team. Stay tuned for further developments!
