Durham CAN is requesting that we attend the work session of the county Commissioners as they discuss planning for the 300 block of E. Main Street for parking vs. affordable housing. The work session will occur at 5 pm, before the regular session which starts at 7 pm.

Here's the info from the Facebook invitation:

Prior to the primary election ALL current candidates for the Board of County Commissioners promised 500+ CAN members they would reserve the 300 Block of East Main Street (between First Presbyterian and Saint Philips Episcopal Churches) for the construction of affordable housing.

County staff is discussing now a parking only strategy, which is different than what Durham residents were promised by the then candidates who wanted to get elected. One might ask, parking only for whom?

During this work session the Commissioners will be briefed by staff, and will be asked to expedite a parking only strategy. This is an opportunity for County Commissioners to keep their word to Durham residents and tell their staff that Durham wants both parking and affordable housing.

We are fighting for housing for county employees, first responders, school teachers, nurses, social workers, bank tellers, and all others that do not qualify for public housing, but don't make enough to pay for luxurious housing downtown.
