Nontheist Group (Virtual Meeting)

We are a community of non-theists within the Unitarian Universalist tradition. Together, we explore the human experience and support each other in personal growth and in working toward the greater good.
We will discuss Sam Harris's short (50 pages) yet thought-provoking essay on Lying.
Questions to consider:
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is “lying is generally OK” and 10 is “lying is never OK” where would you place yourself and why?
Do you have a story like the one that Harris shares about the friend who asked if he was overweight—a time where lying would have been the easy way out but where telling the truth obviously benefitted the friend?
Followers of the ten commandments can say that they tell the truth because one of the commandments tells them not to lie. Why do you tell the truth?
