Our Whole Lives (OWL)

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a series of positive, comprehensive, and age-appropriate educational programs that promote sexual health for multiple age groups. OWL helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, Our Whole Lives goes beyond behavior and anatomy to help participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.

OWL is a limited enrollment class and requires a parent orientation and permission to enroll. Our OWL teachers complete comprehensive training facilitated by trainers from the UUA prior to teaching. The curricula are based on the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education produced by the National Guidelines Task Force, a group of leading health, education, and sexuality professionals assembled by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). For more information about OWL, visit the UUA site.

*Pre-registration is required for all OWL classes. Please complete the RE Registration Form before registering for an OWL program.

8-9th Grade OWL (August – February)

This program for youth focuses on three core themes: respect, responsibility, and relationships. It is a holistic program that moves beyond typical sex education curriculum to encompass the attitudes, values, and feelings that youth have about themselves and the world. In an inclusive and developmentally appropriate manner, it addresses sensitive topics that are typically excluded. Topics covered include: gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, consent, STIs, masturbation, pornography, lovemaking, contraception, unintended pregnancy options, and parenting. The underlying values of the program reflect the justice-oriented traditions of UU.

Parents & Caregivers as Sexuality Educators - Chalice Group

This is a small chalice group (led by OWL teachers) for UU parents/caregivers who are seeking support and skills to be effective sexuality educators of their children. The sessions are designed to meet the needs of adults raising children of a wide age range, from elementary to high school. Participants will be invited to engage deeply with their hopes and fears, their values and practices, in relation to being their child(ren)'s primary sexuality educator. Sessions will also help adults build skills for healthy family communication, which is recognized as the foundation of this program.

OWL is a resource-intensive program, as program facilitators are trained through the UUA’s guidelines. OWL requires a great deal of volunteer time, energy, and financial resources to run. If you are passionate about OWL, please let the know how you would like to support the program at ERUUF. We strive to offer a variety of age levels of OWL every year, and with support, we can do this.
