UU Justice NC June 21, 2024
UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, Friday June 21st at 11:00am - Letter to the Editor - Fighting for Early Childcare Funding If the NC General Assembly doesn't fund early childhood education by the end of June, nearly 1/3 of childcare providers may have to shut down, leaving 100,000 kids without care and families without options. Last week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation released a report estimating that breakdowns in the childcare system are costing North Carolina $5.65 billion in lost economic activity every year. This week, we will be joined by Samantha Salkin, Reproductive Freedom Advocacy Consultant with the ACLU of North Carolina. She will share the brand new short documentary, North Carolina's Abortion Story, which explores the history of abortion in our state, the modern movement for reproductive justice, and the impact of abortion bans on patients and providers. We will also preview this fall’s Abortion Rights Interfaith Phonebank in partnership with National UU the Vote, Pro-Choice NC and Carolina Jews for Justice. UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, Friday, May 24th at 11:00 am. We are in the height of the state legislative session, and many harmful bills will be voted on in the next two weeks. This week we will recap the votes that occurred on 5/22 including the Anti-Protest Bill HB 237. Then we take action on the bills still moving through the legislative process. This will include calling on Governor Cooper to veto the Anti-Immigration Bill HB 10 when it comes to his desk. Join via this Zoom link.

UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, Friday May 17th at 11:00am. This Friday, we'll dive into the bills that are moving right now in the state legislative short session, including updates on the anti-immigration bill HB10 and the anti-free speech bill HB942. We will also hear an in-depth briefing on the new Anti-Protest Bill HB 237. This bill claims to be geared towards "Unmasking Mobs and Criminals" but in actuality, is part of a wave of new anti-protest bills sweeping the country in response to Pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses. North Carolina UU the Vote Launch - Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00pm. Join UU Justice NC and UU's across the state for the official kick-off of our 2024 UU the Vote Campaign. We will be joined by National UU the Vote Organizer, Nora Rasman, Carolina Jews for Justice Executive Director Abby Lublin, and other guests from our partner organizations across NC.
