November Giving for Justice

For this year's November Giving for Justice, ERUUF's Justice Ministry Council unanimously voted to continue our financial donations for Hurricane Helene Relief efforts in Western North Carolina. Each year the Justice Ministry Council selects a justice organization that aligns with our Unitarian Universalist values to donate our Sunday plates to during the month of November as the giving season begins. This month you'll hear from leaders of our Justice Action Groups who will describe how our gifts will contribute to Hurricane Helene relief efforts. GIVE HERE.  Choose Hurricane Disaster Relief in the dropdown menu.

New volunteer opportunity with immigrant women

Our Refugee and Immigrant Action Group is embarking on a new project this fall, matching ERUUF volunteers with local Afghan women to tutor them for their driving tests. Does that sound interesting to you? If so, read on!

Because of rising housing costs, local refugee families are settling further from the resources in city centers. Driving becomes an essential skill for access to everything from picking up groceries, to taking a child to the doctor, to getting a job or attending classes. Our involvement will enable women to gain this practical skill and support their families. Would you be interested in participating? No commitment needed yet.

Send an email to and we'll be in touch. Questions? Dennis McGrath is our point person on this and can be reached at and (407) 342-5821

And, for a fascinating profile of a volunteer driving instructor in California who's taught 400 Afghan women to drive, check out this NY Times article. UU Justice NC September 27, 2024

UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, September 27th at 11:00 - Tell the Legislature to Vote NO on HB 10 Veto Override. Last week, Governor Cooper vetoed HB 10, a bill that would make our communities less safe, increase fear in immigrant communities and undermine democratically elected sheriffs. And, at a time when public schools in our state remain severely underfunded, HB 10 includes a $554 million expansion of private school vouchers. This week, we will be joined by Maria Lopez Gonzalez, Public Policy Advocate at the NC Budget & Tax Center. She will provide a briefing on HB 10, and then put us to work, calling key elected officials who could determine whether the General Assembly successfully overrides the Governor's veto. Review this week's resources and actions on our Google Doc, and Join via this Zoom Link.

Drive Folks to the Polls During Early Voting

ERUUF’s UU the Vote is collaborating with the statewide Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) to drive their constituents to the polls in Granville and Person counties, where there is a huge need, during Early Voting (October 17-November 2).

All you need is a clean car with working seatbelts, a mobile phone with GPS, enthusiasm, and a commitment to get people where they need to go, so they can exercise their right to vote. You can choose which county to go to, a morning or afternoon shift, your preferred day(s) of the week, and whether you do it by yourself or pair up with a buddy.

UU The Vote’s organizing team (Lonna Harkrader, Nancy Couts, Sandy Hochel, and Trisha Lester) is trying to get a sense of how many folks are interested in helping so that we can give Disability Rights an estimate of number of volunteers to expect in October. Early Voting is only 17 days. Let’s show DRNC how ERUUF shows up when we collaborate, and let’s get those voters to the polls!

Please complete this form as soon as possible if you’re interested in getting involved. More specific information will be forthcoming in mid-September.

Questions? Contact Trisha Lester.
