Tranzmission Accomplished: ERUUF's Hurricane Helene Supply Donations Reach Western NC

This past Thursday, I loaded up my hatchback and drove the Hurricane Helene recovery supplies donated by ERUUFians up to Asheville. The diverse donations included food, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, blankets, and more. The week before, I learned that our initial donation destination was no longer accepting supplies. With help from UU Justice NC, I identified Tranzmission as a Western North Carolina nonprofit who would benefit best from ERUUF's donated items.

November Giving for Justice
For this year's November Giving for Justice, ERUUF's Justice Ministry Council unanimously voted to continue our financial donations for Hurricane Helene Relief efforts in Western North Carolina. Each year the Justice Ministry Council selects a justice organization that aligns with our Unitarian Universalist values to donate our Sunday plates to during the month of November as the giving season begins. This month you'll hear from leaders of our Justice Action Groups who will describe how our gifts will contribute to Hurricane Helene relief efforts. GIVE HERE. New volunteer opportunity with immigrant women
Our Refugee and Immigrant Action Group is embarking on a new project this fall, matching ERUUF volunteers with local Afghan women to tutor them for their driving tests. Does that sound interesting to you? If so, read on!
Because of rising housing costs, local refugee families are settling further from the resources in city centers. Driving becomes an essential skill for access to everything from picking up groceries, to taking a child to the doctor, to getting a job or attending classes. Our involvement will enable women to gain this practical skill and support their families. Would you be interested in participating? No commitment needed yet.

UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, September 13th at 11:00 am - This week, the NC General Assembly was called back into session to vote on legislation HB 10. This bill would siphon public funding to private schools and wealthy families and establish anti-immigrant measures that are costly and don’t make us safer. UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, September 20th at 11:00. We will be joined by Noel Nickle, Director of the NC Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. Beginning September 26th, the NCCADP team will walk 136 miles to raise awareness of the 136 lives at risk of execution in North Carolina and to call on Governor Roy Cooper to eliminate that risk by commuting death sentences to prison terms before he leaves office at the end of 2024. UU Justice NC's Friday Action Hour, September 27th at 11:00 - Tell the Legislature to Vote NO on HB 10 Veto Override. Last week, Governor Cooper vetoed HB 10, a bill that would make our communities less safe, increase fear in immigrant communities and undermine democratically elected sheriffs. And, at a time when public schools in our state remain severely underfunded, HB 10 includes a $554 million expansion of private school vouchers. This week, we will be joined by Maria Lopez Gonzalez, Public Policy Advocate at the NC Budget & Tax Center. She will provide a briefing on HB 10, and then put us to work, calling key elected officials who could determine whether the General Assembly successfully overrides the Governor's veto.
